I currently own a 2001 f250 diesel. Crew cab short bed with a 6 speed. Just purchased a tractor backhoe that weighs in at 8000 lbs so its time to upgrade to a bigger trailer. Not sure what PA law requires and I'm hoping some one here will know. 12000 lbs total tractor and trailer I would assume. My bumper hitch says 1000 tongue weight and 10000 tow. Weight distribution I can do 1700 tongue and 14000 tow. Do you think I would be legal? Thank you.

This isn't a business and won't be towed everyday. Just for family or friends to help out or make a couple bucks once in a while.

Okay, I'll try to answer this the best I can. As far as license is concerned, as long as your total combination weight is below 26,000, you can drive legally on a class C. If your truck is registered as a combination vehicle (probably not), you must be registered for the combination weight of truck, trailer, and load. If not, if you were stopped, they would check the weight of the truck and trailer/load separately. You can not exceed max weight of your registration on both truck and trailer, and vehicle's max axle ratings.

 

wrong. if you are hauling commercial, if your gvw rating on your trailer is over 10,000 lbs (meaning 10,001 lbs and greater, you MUST have a class a cdl.

This is true, but the OP said he wasn't going to be towing commercially, just for friends/family.
