Default Maxxis Bighorn 315/75R16's

Well since the ball joints on the truck are shot, and they are getting replaced this Thursday ($300 total for labor, plus about $200 for parts, sweet deal!) and the tires are fairly well worn, especially the inside of the front tires, I've decided its time for some new boots for the 97.

I've been looking for a good M/T, but I'm not spending a grand on new tires, I gotta get a leveling kit, alignment, and a bunch of other stuff for the truck and the shop, so I just can't afford it. I've been looking at Cooper STT's, and while they look good and seem to be able to handle what the trucks will do, they are about $200 more for a set than the Maxxis tires, and I can't see any reason why the Maxxis tires aren't just as good.

From what I've been reading on them a lot of guys are very impressed with them, but I can't find anyone running them on a big heavy truck like ours. Being they are only D rated tires, they aren't really made for our application, but the most I ever pull for a distance is a few thousand pounds worth of ATV stuff and hunting gear. And as it is I'm running D rated 305/70/16 BFG AT's, they seem to do just fine.

Don't bother saying Toyo's or anything like that, they're too much $$$. And personally, I like the fact that the Maxxis are ready for studs. We get some pretty bad weather here in Buffalo (like I have to tell anyone, you see on the news at least once a year) and it would be nice to have the option for studding the tires (especially not having ABS).

So what do you guys think? Anyone run them or know anyone who is? I might have to end up being the guinea pig unless somebody tells me a reputable horror story about them.

I'm also kinda interested in these. I'm in the same boat as you (Just did ball joints last week, and DT Trackbar the weeek prior.). By the way, I got my ball joints done for $110 a side. I like to do all my own work, but for that price I'll let someone else I trust have the fun!

I just posted a thread (2 seconds after you) with a comprehensive list of 35" Mud Terrains for our 16" wheels. More for your reference with avg prices. Check that thread too.

Like you, I've heard good things about the Maxxis, just nothing on a truck that's already at the weight limit for the front axle.

Yeah, nice deal on those joints, fortunately your not in the rust belt, so things come apart like they should, I couldn't get anyone to touch them for under $300 a side beside this guy I used to help build race car chassis for.

Forgot to add the option of the Hankook's, but they seem to be in about the same price range as the Cooper's.

Oh yeah, and I have Centerline 16" wheels, not the factory ones, so they are considerably wider.
