from what I can find searching online last night the HE351 was definitely used from '04.5-07.5, and that the '03-04 turbo is different and significantly smaller, but I wasn't able to find what the 03-04 turbo is and if there were 2 different size HE351's (in other words if the '03-04 is the rumored smaller HE351 or if it's something else like an HY35).

kazairl, I'm with you on the HX40 shaft... I have a few hx40's sitting around they are definitely beefier then the HX35's.
The 03 and 04 used the HE341 which has the same exhaust housing as a 351, but it uses a 57mm compressor compared to the 60mm in the 351.

The 341 also uses a manual wastegate, where as the 351 is electronic.

that helps a bit... so I'm guessing that the HE341 pretty close to the HY35 but with the different compressor cover (and I think that inducer size is slightly bigger... somewhere I had a chart).

with the HE351, by "electronic" do you mean it had a solinoid in the actuator line or do you mean that it really has an electronic wastegate actuator?

I'll have to compare what I have on the truck to one of the HX40's that I have laying around. If the compressor backing plate matches mounting style to the HE341 it would be very easy to make a quick hybrid upgrade that would cost me nothing rather then chase down an HE351 to play with.

OTOH, since I have some HT3B's, HX50, HX52 and a few other turbos in that same size range sitting around, maybe a compound setup without messing with the stock turbo might be more fun (it's mainly used for towing, hauling and puttering around, the only reason that it will probably see some 1/4mile track time is because _everything_ I own has made at least a few track passes).

The 351 wastegate has an externally mounted electronic actuator on the compressor cover.

You can get the 351 pretty cheap and the manual wastgate actuator can be mounted to it.

It's becoming a popular mod for guys with the 03 and 04 trucks to swap out the 341 for the 351. It cools quite bit better and supports more power with very minimal difference in spool up.

64/71/13ss from htt this is a turbo that you can well be a fighter on the streets and still hook to your trailer all day plus you can add fuel 100sticks the arson kit(bag of parts) and a small pusher pump and bam with a programer you will be at 500 hp and live all day long and still do what you want

That was going to be my next question... I have a nice, polished, HT3B which seems to be the turbo of choice for the larger turbo in a compound setup, which was listed as working well with an HX35 or an HX40, and my HE341 should be somewhere in between those 2 in size as well as 2 or three HX40's sitting around (one that I polished...) if I wanted to go that way, and even a GTS4202 which should be similar to the S440...

but what I'm thinking is that my truck isn't a pulling or drag sled, it's a street toy that I use for hauling stuff around, so I'm wondering if I might be better off with a more conservatively sized large turbo like I also have an HX50 and HX52 (the 52 is a small turbine model that should spool fast), which I'm guessing would spool much faster, which should be more fun in a street truck where I'll never miss a little bit of top end power.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

while I'm thinking of fun ways to blow up my truck, what are you guys using for an external wastegate that will hold >40psi? I'd assume that that also means using a custom exhaust manifold?
