I know a guy in KY trying to sell his BD Twins....

I had the perfect turbo for you. I am supposed to be recieving payment today, possibly, but if the deal falls through I'll contact you.
I did a lot of towing and playing with my HTB2 62/12 and with some extra fueling I can honestly say that it was a perfect turbo for me. I was not after huge dyno numbers or quick timeslips though. Just safe reliable power. The turbo was great for me until I tried a downloader then my issues started. So, I would just be careful what you use to get your extra fueling. Without extra fueling any larger turbo will be laggy....

Hey, Dieselminded!!! i have an 03 common rail with FASS 150/150 bag of parts on the CP3, smarty, intake, exhaust on my truck and i have a friend that i can get a super HX40 from for pretty cheap... do you think my truck will push it efficiently?? i pull a trailer 3-4 days a week during the spring-fall months and i truck pull a few times a year but the big thing is i have 600 miles each way to school. i am going to get 50 hp nozzles this summer but do think the super HX40 is a good unit for me?? i would like some more power yet not kill my MPG and id like to keep a decent spool time but also dont need to blow up my truck when its lit? i will also probably do head studs this summer as well but what are your thought??

Thanks,
Andrew

Well, while we’re reopening a old thread, how about some additional schooling, I’ve got a pretty good handle on the earlier Cummins turbos but not on the later ones.

I know that the early 12v 5.9’s used H1C’s, which later became HX35’s and then HX35’s on the manual tranny trucks and HY35 (with the smaller, faster spooling 9cm^2 exhaust housing being the main difference) on the automatics, but I get fuzzy after that. I’ve heard that at some point all the 5.9’s got the HY35, but then eventually they went to the HE351 and that there might be 2 different HE351s?

What turbo is on my ’04 24V truck? What year did they go over to the HE351s and are there more than one size of HE351? What are the real differences? From what I understand, the HX and HY 35 have the same compressor side, both somewhere in the mid 50mm inducer range but the HY has the smaller turbine side with a single inlet vs split scroll. I’ve been told (never actually seen) that the HE351 uses the HY size (9cm^2), single scroll turbine side but a significantly larger compressor side, something on the order of 60mm?

IIRC the HX40's have Issues with the shaft getting bent

IDK about the shaft bending. it is supposed to be stouter than the 35 shaft. The Suer HX40 is a 60mm compressor wheel. All hx40's(every one I've seen anyways) are 60mm.

The HE351 is also 60mm with a 9cm open housing. So a HX40 won't help much Andrew. You'll need to go bigger if you want more ponies.

Silver IS it and 04 and not an 04.5? They should have the same turbo. However my knowledge of CR's isn't that great so I'd get a second opinion. As far as I know all the CRs had HE351. IF any did hav HY it would only be the 03-04 years more'n likely. They use the 9cm housing. The HX had a 12cm divided housing.

The only other real difference in the Cr turbos is when they went to the VE351 which is the variable geometry turbo the 07.5 ^ use.

BUt like I said, I think I know more than I actually do.

My truck is an '04, no cat, 305hp...

from what I can find searching online last night the HE351 was definitely used from '04.5-07.5, and that the '03-04 turbo is different and significantly smaller, but I wasn't able to find what the 03-04 turbo is and if there were 2 different size HE351's (in other words if the '03-04 is the rumored smaller HE351 or if it's something else like an HY35).

kazairl, I'm with you on the HX40 shaft... I have a few hx40's sitting around they are definitely beefier then the HX35's.
