His was a 2001 Reg cab 4x4 with 79,000 miles on it. Said it got 8mpg loaded or not. Sold 'er for $9500.00 and bought a 04 PSD that coughed-up it's HPOP the 2nd day he owned it.
Figure all the 8.1L is, is a stroker 454 big-block. Drag racers have spent a lot of money for a lot of years to get that kind of displacement from their BBC's.

we got a bunch of them 8.1 at work and they haul man, i wouldn't toy with one of them. they pull awsome too. we have them in 2500,3500 singles and two 4500 box vans, and they ride like a dream. and also i got a new chevy gasser 6.0 and don't seem to have a problem gettin over 98 with it. only done it a couple of times gets kinda scary with the utility box i got on it.

I have a hard time believing a stock duramax couldn't take it.
