I usually don't have a problem with paying more if I can have it same day.

Save for an M1A.

If you are absolutely set on an AK, you need to get either an Saiga or an Arsenal. Saigas can be had for a little over $300 unconverted and I hear the conversion is pretty easy to DIY. I think a base model Arsenal is about $800.

Saigas are imported as a "sporting" rifle in a few calibers including .223, 5.45x39, 7.62x39, 7.62x51, and 12 ga. Because they are "sporting" rifles, they do not have the pistol grip and the trigger is farther back on the receiver so you can reach it from the standard hunting type rifle stock. Here's an example of an unconverted saiga: SAIGA IZ 132 Sporterized AK47 16" Carbine 7.62x39 : Semi-auto at GunBroker.com
Another thing about the Saigas is that not all AK accessories will fit them, but they have they're own lineup of accessories and are quite comparable in cost to other AK stuff.

The conversion is putting the parts on that make it an "assault" style rifle and look more like a traditional AK. This would include the pistol grip and stock, plus any internal parts(if needed). I've never done the conversion or ever seen it done so I am not 100% sure what all it entails. I have heard that it is very simple to do and that you can buy an unconverted saiga, convert it, and deck it out pretty cheap. You can buy ones that have already been converted but they'll run about what an Arsenal does, maybe cheaper if you watch gunbroker or auctionarms.

That model or the SGL-31(5.45x39) are the ones that I would get from Arsenal. They're the base models and plenty good enough for most of us.

There is more to it then that but it is easy. Just gotta make sure you have enough American parts after converting. I converted my saiga in an afternoon.

Thanks guys i was always wondering what the difference was between a saiga and regular ak.

Rswords could you elaborate a little more? How much did you spend converting it? Any special tools needed? Any pics?

Thanks!
