I cant decide what i want to do, Now im stuck on getting a mosin nagant, or build my own ar 15, or get the xd. Im really wanting something for the most fun. The ar15 sounds cool since i would get to build it.

Heres a build for under $600
M4 Rifle Kits, AR 15 Kits, Gun Kits | Del Ton Rifles from Del-Ton, Inc.
AR-15 Lower Receivers

But see i dont know what size barrel to get and what the longer or shorter size does. Im not sure if Delton is any good. I have heard that Palmetto state armory make decent stuff. Id like to keep the build under $800.

But then i could get a cheap *** mosin and mod it til my hearts content but the ammo that i have found seems a bit pricey to shoot out of a $100 gun.

The xd would be great but i really enjoy rifles. I could mod it to my hearts content as well.

I dunno, hipoint shot 50 rounds today not one hiccup, federal fmj and hornaday jhp.

I've never built a upper, requires a few specialized tools to assemble one...and the one time I looked into it..they were not cheap...

Delton makes good stuff. I'd just go with a 16" barrel, any shorter an you have to deal with NFA paperwork and tax stamps. But it really depends on what you're wanting to do with it for which length barrel you go with. If you plan to put a lot of rounds though it, avoid the "pencil thin" barrels. I'd try to get at least an M4 contoured barrel.

What ammo were you looking at for the mosin? I just ran the surplus ammo through mine. Its corrosive so you have to really clean it after shooting it, but its not really that bad.

Since you've got a hi-point, I'd probably get a rifle. You could always keep an eye out for a used XD.

What does a 20" government barrel mean? Longer would mean more distance right? I want the rifle for the range, hogs, maybe a few tactical courses, and of course if this country goes to **** rifle.

I just went to midway usa and looked at mosin ammo didnt wasnt cheap roughly $14 for a bux of 20!

Yes i thought about that to i have a pistol that shoots and does it decently so a rifle would be a good idea. Theres a few xds that are used on the texas gun trader but they want so much for them!

Government profile is the same as M4 or basically what the military uses. It has notches cut out for the M203 grenade launcher and is a bit lighter weight because the soldiers carry them all day everyday.

Longer means more velocity. You could take 2 identical rifles, one with a 16" barrel and one with a 20" barrel and with the right shooter could probably both hit the same target at say 500 yards pretty easy. The longer barrel will also help with accuracy at that range. 20" would probably work good for you. It would be great for the range and for hunting, and would work for tactical courses. The Marines use 20" barreled rifles, so tactically speaking, it would work just fine. Just keep in mind that it will be heavier. For those particular uses you list, I PERSONALLY would go with an 18" barrel, but I'm not into the hunting as much as a lot of folks so a 16" barrel would be great for what my planned uses are for an AR.

I bought my mosin ammo from AmmunitionToGo.com, but since you're in Texas, you'd have to pay sales tax if you ordered through them. Here's a link to google shopping for 7.62x54r ammo. Lots to pick from. The brass cased, soft point hunting ammo is going to cost more than the Russian imported stuff or military surplus stuff.
