From the article:

"They tracked the bear into an area of heavy cover where Mr. Stevenson was attacked by the wounded grizzly bear," Lincoln County Undersheriff Brent Faulkner said in a news release late Friday. "Mr. Bell was able to shoot the bear multiple times, eventually killing it."
Fraley said Montana hunters are required to take a black bear-grizzly bear identification program. He said identifying them can be difficult, and that the two species typically behave differently.

1. Be sure of your target--if you can't tell the difference between black bear and a grizzly, wait until you can BEFORE you go hunt one.

2. Learn to shoot---no reason to take multiple shots on a 400 pound bear if you're using the correct caliber and correct shot placement.

BUT....this *is* America, where stupid people breed, vote, and hunt, so it's not a surprise. Too bad the bear died, it could've ran off, got better and killed another dumbass who goes out there ill prepared thinking they know everything...

I'm sure shot placement is harder when you're getting mauled by a grizzly bear? If the bear was that close he might've been down to his sidearm, who knows. Sounds like Mr. Bell should just be glad he's alive.

And that's why they call it "hunting" and not "killing".

If you shoot a bear and it runs off......either the shot wasn't placed correctly, or the projectile was incorrect for the job at hand.

If they were hunting black bear, chances of them using a grizzly-capable cartridge is low, as many people feel, with good reason, that a .300 Win Mag or equivalent is acceptable for black bear....you can hunt black bear quite successfully with a bow, so 7mm Mag, 30-06, 270, etc....those sizes are considered acceptable for black bear.

For grizzlies, with thicker hide, larger bone structure, nastier attitudes, etc.....calibers such as the above are considered unacceptable. Surely there are people who have successfully used those in one-shot kills on grizzlies but they are the exception, not the rule.

I don't believe the hunters were adequately prepared for this hunt, especially since they shot a grizzly bear on a black bear hunt to begin with.

Having a .338 Win Mag, .375 H&H, etc type of round in their possession is doubtful, based on the information the article has provided.

Subject to interpretation, but all things IMHO add up to dumbass hunters who got what was coming to them.

If you read the thread, you'll notice that we were talking about the hunters shooting a bear many times without dying, These two guys weren't the sharpest tool in the shed, so I said it wouldn't surprize me if these yahoos had a 30-30 If I hunted bear I would at least use a 338 WIN. MAG. You have to read the post carefully
