I bought a shanty and used it 3 times and have never used it again. in NY you are allowed 5 tip ups and 2 jigging poles per person.
I max out of course. but I jig for perch and crappie while I wait for the big fish on the tip ups.
the shanties dont work for me because I chase the panfish down. perch are a schooling fish and move. so after catching a few fish out of a hole sometimes makes the hole go "dry" and just moving 10-20 feet away will trigger some more bites. if I find a good hole I will go back to it after 20-30 minutes and usually pick up a few more fish.
as far as jigs are concerned. usually I use something that glows in the dark but I tie 2 jigs on one 3-6" higher than the bottom one. this helps with finding the depth they are at and sometimes jig color. I have doubled up on numerous occasions. I tip the jigs with either a small minnow or a fly larvae.
also a vexlar is the best tool you could ever invest in

The only kind of ice fishing I have done is in by reaching my arm in the freezer looking for the ice dispenser clog.

A few of my buddies are fishing on the east side of the mountains. But it's just too cold for me. I would much rather be sitting waist deep on a pond shootin quackers!

Ice Fishing is fun up here in the north country. We dont use a hut or shanty , we sled to the lake, build a fire on the ice.,use an augger to dig a hole in the ice, put in our lines . drink lots of beer and wait, pour a bit of rye in the hole. for good luck of course. sometimes you get one or more and sometimes you get skunked. For bait we used worms and shrimp.
Its all in fun. They sure look big just before they come out of the hole though...
Its a New years eve tradition.. here.
