Got the wife a new handgun, PK380
Those Walthers are cool little pistols. My brother has been eye-balling one for a while now but won't take the plunge, mostly because .380 ammo is still pretty expensive and hard to come by here.
I carry a .380 during the summer months, and while it ain't no .45, with good modern personnel defense ammo, it's more than adequate to save yer bacon. I keep mine stoked with 90 grain Speer Gold Dots. If you can get 'em, check 'em out. Anyone on the receiving end of those "flying ash cans" is going to be in for a REAL bad day. Cor-Bon also offers an excellent personal defense load for the .380.
This is just my opinion but, I'm just not too impressed with the thought of a laser on a home protection gun. Yeah, the little red (or green) dot dancing on a feller's chest can make him think twice about why he's there, but it also points back to EXACTLY where the person holding the gun is and gives the bad guy something to aim at if he decides to shoot back.
Maybe consider one of those retina-burning ultra-bright weapon lights like a SureFire. Bad guy can't go on the offensive when he's blinded like a deer in your headlights and it gives the home owner that extra second to positively identify the person as a threat (or not) and take the appropriate action. It won't fit in a holster for concealed carry with the light, but she can still hide it an a purse, or just take the light off if she wishes to carry.

Oh and some more pics...

Did you get her a concealed carry permit ? Easy as hell in VA....only need a hunter's safety cert and a clean no felony record........me and the wife have one ......she carrys a Star (interarms) subcompact 9mm 10 rd......it's a nice little carry ot truck gun for the price

Good looking gun, glad to see some women gettin into shooting and self defense.
Now a full-grown man probably wouldn't get away with that so easily, as far as the baddie being un-armed, but a woman defending herself in her own home in the above scenario likely wouldn't have to worry about charges being filed against her. Even in a state without a Castle Doctrine.

That's the battle plan at our household too. You go looking for trouble, chances are yer gonna find it. Then you've got months-worth of hell in a courtroom explaining why you brought the fight to the burglar. Now if she's locked in her bedroom, and he kicks the door in, well then he's pretty much bought and paid for. Even if he turns out to be un-armed, it's obvious he wasn't there for a social visit. Just make sure she uses those 5 magic words... "I feared for my LIFE!"

I go for the 12 G A U G E
It has been said that when it comes to home defense, you use a pistol to fight your way to your rifle. I agree it's hard to beat a 12-gauge shotgun for home security. I keep my 870 stoked with #4 buckshot (27 plated pellets each measuring .24 caliber) but it's recoil really beats up the wife. I'm thinking a carbine in .45 auto would be the next best thing.
