From a NFA webpage:

The term "short-barreled shotgun" means a shotgun having one or more barrels less than eighteen inches in length and any weapon made from a shotgun (whether by alteration, modification, or otherwise) if such weapon as modified has an overall length of less than twenty-six inches. [18 USCS § 921]

Violations of the Act are punishable by up to 10 years in federal prison and forfeiture of all devices or firearms in violation, and the individual's right to own or possess firearms in the future. The Act provides for a penalty of $10,000 for certain violations.[6] A willful attempt to evade or defeat a tax imposed by the Act is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $100,000 fine ($500,000 in the case of a corporation or trust), under the general tax evasion statute.[7] For an individual, the felony fine of $100,000 for tax evasion could be increased to $250,000.
I got six with no license to go with my unlicensed USAS-12 and gelignite.

I love my 500, and while yes it rattels it has never miss fired on me and I abuse the hell out of it. Its the gun that goes out in the rain, snow, sand, dirt, marsh, ect. Pretty much any were I don't wanna take my Berretta auto. IMO Good cheap gun.

As for the stick mine feels the same as the 870 and the Beretta 390.

I only hunt for bad people. I'm the country's greatest vigilante that the FBI doesn't know about, because as long as I flush twice I leave no evidence.

The 870 express super mag is chambered for 2.75,3, and 3.5 inch shells. I love mine. But when it comes down to it you can't go wrong with the moss 500 either. Both are worth what you pay and aftermarket options are endless.
