500 Smith & Wesson....
I'm getting a Handi-Rifle next week in .500 S&W for wild hog hunting in florida. Anybody else shoot this as a "rifle" round? I know it wont have the long distance of a .2XX or .3XX caliber round but I need the knock down power, not long range sniper abilities, and for less than 300 bucks out the door with no scope you cant beat it.......
I am putting a 2 to 4 power scope on it also and was wondering what would be a decent quality, decent priced one that will take the pounding of the 500.......
My gun guy went hog hunting 2 weeks ago with a buddy of his and it put a hole in the hog the size of a grown man's fist, so that immediately sold me right there......

Logan they have the same ballistics as a 45/70 and some loads have proved to be better.
I have never shot one out of a Rifle I do have on for my TC Pistol. It kicks like a mule so be ready. They will take out hogs no problem with a great placed shot.
SSK is who I got my barrel from. I will order one in a rifle version. Or I haven't decided there is a new company that is making them in lever actions. For hog and soon a damage permit for bear.

Who's farm pigs are you killing, there aint no wild pigs in central ohio, and there probably isnt but 5 bears in the whole state.......Dont shoot the bears though, just call ODNR and they will come trap them and relocate them.......They are tracking most of the bears in ohio.......

Should make a great rifle for hogs. We bought my dad a handi-rifle in .223 for his ground hogs a few years ago and he loves it! At 300 yards off of a bi-pod, he can easily throw my hand-loads into a baseball with it.
As far as a scope, we have a Bushnell (owned by Bausch & Lomb) Banner 1.5-4.5x32mm on wifey's lightweight .50 cal muzzle-loading rifle. It's been a rock-solid optic and she's used this set-up to take several whitetails. It's clear, fog proof and the field of view at 1.5x is so wide (67 feet at 100 yds) that you can see the front 10" of the rifle's barrel through the scope! Best part is, it only cost us around $90.00 new when we bought it 5 years ago.
