Default blue tongue deer dieing

I don't know about other areas but around here the deer are dieing like flies. They say from the drought some flies carry a bacteria that causes the tongue and throat to swell. When this starts they only live around 36 hours and can't drink or eat. I found a small buck dead in the edge of a pond. Buddy found 8 around one of his ponds, two bucks in the upper 150 and above. Is this just in missouri or are other states having these problems? Ain't good, they say for everyone you find there is probably 5 times that you don't find.

This is a serious problem. I would recommend getting a mosquito propane trap in the vicinity and seeing if you can cut back on the population of mosquitos and for every deer you find dead with a swollen tongue take the body and bury it deep down and put lime rock over the body to prevent it from being spread to other insects and thus eventually making it to another deer.

I would say hold off on a huge harvest this year and only take a buck or two at the most.

EHD is a bad thing for deer (like you said 36 hours) but its not transferable from deer to deer they can only get it from the little flys (midgs) another thing it does to the deer is gives it an extreamly high feaver and thats why you will find them around water...we have found about 100 or so this year...if you get a chance to see another one of these dead deer check out there hooves but dont be suprized if there already broke off!!! if there not i bet you can stick your finger threw them like an egg shell....it really put a big hit on our lease this year .....alot of time and money waisted
