Default 1.6 VW diesel engine prodject

Well I went to a junkyard here where I live to find a diesel engine for a class I'm taking. The guy in charge had one left and it wasn't in a car. Less work for me and my helper, Papa Smurf, to remove the engine. Well it was on the side of a hill with some parts stacked on top of it to try and keep it dry. Here's some of what I've done so far...

Congrats- you scored an '89 and up, 71hp engine. You can tell because it does have already an coolant/ oil cooler. This is a good base for more hp- if you add an intercooler and very important: an additional oil cooler.
Timing is very critical on this engines- you know how to adjust them?

Thank you I actually don't know how to time it because I haven't looked into how to do it since I am just tearing it down at the moment and almost have it down to the bare block, I'll put more pics later on it. It does have an oil cooler attached to the oil filter adapter. I looked up the transaxel numbers at the bottom of the lip on the transaxel close to the engine and it said the it was made in early 82. Can the same transaxel be used on an 89? And what is an intercooler and where can you put them?

Well I got it down to near the bare block and I just have to get the crankshaft and the pistons out now. Found out that the three camshaft followers in the front were burnt and two of them were cracked out of the three and the disk on the on in the very front was burnt too. It didn't bode too well and whenever I pulled the cylinder cover off, I found out that it was cracked in the two font cylinders where the intake and exhaust ports are. That was an moment. But I found one to replace it online for about 450 so all is well-ish.

This should take you to an album that shows you what all I have done to my engine so far.
