+1 for the alternator pulley.... alot easier than the crank pulley.... just rotate it backwards like you are trying to remove the alternator nut..... the motor won't turn the other way.....

Hmm, never tried turning it that way, I always used the crank. I see how it would work though, I guess I just overestimated the compression of the diesel.

On my 1965 Chevy Impala w/ HO283 I can turn the engine by turning the fan (no clutch in 65) I just have to push on the belt a little to add extra tension, but it works.

Just use a pry bar on the ring gear. Then you dont have to climb out from under the truck all the time.
