I have had two. They will usually cut thicker material than advertised if you are patient with them. Given a choice between a plasma cutter and an oxy-acetalene set I would rather use the plasma. It gives cleaner cuts is faster and doesn't overheat and stress the metal around the cut. My present cutter is a solar 2050 that i got at an auction. If you plan on using it much it will be wise to get a name brand unit than the cheep imports, but the cheep ones might be ok for occasional use. Be sure to do your homework at finding consumables because there is a large difference in prices on replacements.

My father in law has one of the cheap ones off ebay. Supposedly uses "inverter technology". Don't remember the brand. It is blue. About $400. Supposed to sever 2 inch plate. Have used it on 1/2" plate. Works good. We use it quite a bit. Haven't had any problems with it in the 3 years he has had it. He was skeptical, but decided if it didn't work he wouldn't be out a whole lot, and if it did he would save a bundle. It is working so far.

i have this one - Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

i waited and found it onsale for $699.99 and used a 25% off one item coupon and then bought the 2 or 3 year extended warranty and was still in it for less than $600. best "cheap" tool i have ever bought, rated for 0.47 inch steel and will cut 1/2" mild steel without issues, Stainless it is a bit slower on but all in all it is a GREAT unit for the price.

I've got a Hypertherm and love it.Its best to invest in a brand name machine because you will always be able to get parts and consumables locally whereas you'll likely be completely out of luck with an offshore Ebay special. Also be cautious of used machines as I'm sure many owners take them well outside their acceptable duty cycles which is damaging to capacitors.

ESAB Powercut 650.....plasma cutters are good for cutting stuff and not melting things with 6" of where your gonna cut.....finish is alot smoother, and you can handle the part right after cutting.....beats a torch hands down.

Now if ya gotta cut and bend.....do the torch thing.........

Miller, ESAB, Thermodyne, Hypertherm, all make GREAT plasma cutters -- but they are priced beyond the reach of a home-shop fabricator.

The guys that do a ton of fabricating at home are loving the Longevity inverter models. Over at Pirate 4x4 (where they try to live up to their name and flame the crap out of anything that they can) love the Longevity models.

I'm saving for one myself right now.

The Parker models also have some favor over at Pirate. What Parker does is import a machine similar to that of Harbor Freight, but then they open the boxes, test and fix a few things that commonly give problems, and they sell the units with a decent torch that uses readily available consumables. They have a great repuation in the off-road world and have great prices as well.
