Default Looking to buy a cummins. Should I go stock or one that's modified?

New to cummins. Looking to purchase one. Looking at a 2001 24 valve completely stock. All original parts including original tranny and vp pump with around 180k miles. Also looking at a 01 24 valve that has been modified, with new vp pump. Built tranny, air dog 150, air dog intake, edge with attitude, which can monitor all the gauges. And 4" exhaust. It's got 201k miles. Both are around the same price. Which should I go for? Thanks in advance

Depending on condition of the trucks I would go with the modified one cause it has all the weak spots already fixed. Just drive it and make sure it's got good fuel pressure nothing below 10 psi and make sure the front end is nice and tight they both sound like nice trucks

Whichever one has less rust

Seriously though, the nicer one. Mods are cheaper than trucks, and it's nice to know exactly what's been done because you did it. Just my 2¢

really look at the truck that is modded because everyone i know who has a modded truck has ran the crap out of them and always have stuff breaking so make sure he has taken good care of it. but otherwise the modded one is the best because all those modds on that truck will add up to alot of money with the stock one.

imo i would go stock. If you buy a modded truck you have a better chance of having problems like a trans about to go or injection pump because somone beat the crap out of it or didnt know what they wer doing when they modded it

I would go stock, the one with mods has probably been abused, but check em both out. Good luck

Its a toss up either way. With stock, you can build your way, exactly what you want. On the other hand, modded, its already pretty much done. But, like previously mentioned, probably ran hard. Look at pros and cons of each truck. What exactly are your intentions? Work truck, DD, work and play??

Oh and another thing, research the mods. What I mean is: Were the mods done right, previous owner know what he/ she was doing, Too much or too little, Etc....
Also, what kind of mods are you referring to? With more detailed mods description, other readers can give you more/ better insight. Know what I mean??

depends if you yourself arnt a mechanic it wouldnt hurt to bring someone along or go to a shop and have them to a check on both trucks. ask a million questions and get the facts on both. haggle with them and as said try to get receipts or proof of the mods being done correctly.

Its a two-edged sword: if you buy a truck with mods, thats $$$$$ that you dont have to spend on it, but you don't know how hard it was run. With it stock, you have a greater chance of the engine not being abused, but it costs money to put the mods on it.
