Default thinking about getting my first diesel

hello everyone ive been wanting a diesel more and more lately but dont have the cash to buy one. and ive done some lookin and ive found a guy who is willing to trade his 96 cummins for my current truck. but i know next to nothing about a diesel im just wondering if it would be a good idea or not heres some details on the cummins as i said its a 96 12v cummins automatic ext cab long box with 291k on it (good or bad mileage) he says theres nothing wrong with it and all hes done to it is turned the fuel up an put a new 3" exhaust with 6" tip now my truck is a 95 1500 with 202k on body but has newer 5.2L engine roughly 50k and brand new nv 3500 trans 5in lift with 35s reg cab short box whats yalls opinion on the matter would u make the trade

My honest opinion would be to trade. You will get better fuel milage with the cummins, better dependability, more interior and bed space and no smog. I have always ran chevy's and GMC's and love each one of them. My last truck was a '97 GMC Sierra xcab short bed straight axled with a 7" lift and 35's with 198K on the motor, tranny brand new and I would trade my GMC for my dodge any day of the week. 291k on a cummins is not bad especially since it hasn't been messed with (that anyone knows of). My 2 cents....trade.

Id just look the truck over real good, especially the engine area. Check for leaks, look all the hoses over, stuff like that.

I would take it. The thing with these trucks is the owner needs to have a understanding before buying, the price of maintenance and be willing to learn and understand the truck. If you have a use for it and are willing to do some work now and again it will be a good investment. Me personally would take a diesel over a gasser any day for the power potiental and life of the motor. Good luck with your choice and dont rush into anything. If you are looking for a diesel the right one will come around eventually.
