thanks for the feedback guys, it sounds like they can last if not abused and maintained correctly, or burn up quick... the search goes on...

416K Km's on the original stock tranny in my 98 12V, which did do a fair bit of hauling, and its starting to slip but thats mostly my fault. I drive it like its stolen all day every day and have for a little over 20k kms in the last three months and the tranny is taking it in stride.

#1 Buy the manual NV4500 truck...

#2 Get a South Bend 13125-OFEK (best bang for the buck)

#3 Grind your plate, tune your AFC

AND.....

you will totally have forgotten that AUTO Dodge RAM trucks existed in about a fraction of a second !

Uncle of mine has a 1998 12valve AUTO and his tranny is burnt up, no mods just occasional towing, 130.000miles on the clock !

98 extended cab should be a "quad cab" with the suicide rear doors making it a "4 door" it should also have a digital odometer if it is a true 98. i have a friend with a 96 4x4 with over 327K on a stock rebuild, he just had to replace the OD clutches and the shift solenoids and installed a shift kit and he tows every day with it, the truck has 488K miles on it.

OR

'97 12v ext cab w/ 5 spd, new tranny at 190k w/ HD clutch, no mods to engine except fuel pump turned up a bit, has been used to tow quite a bit but runs great. has 200k -asking $8,800.00
don't forget about the 5th gear failures in these transmissions. remember that clutches are wear items and will need replacing and aren't cheap, if you are going to tow look into the upgraded larger clutch and flywheel and better hydros

the guy with the 2nd truck told me that the older autos are crap and should be avoided. Is this true?
not really, he just wanted you to buy his.....

I'm not looking for a truck to go fast in or blow smoke, just a good work truck that will last me and tow an occasional load. Does the stock auto tranny w/ 200k scare you gurus?? mine lasted to 160K, 80K it lived life in front of a horse trailer and haulin hay, the next 60K was hooked to a race car trailer and a vinyl siding trailer and the last 20K i beat the crap out of it as i started modding the truck before it gave up the ghost.

any guidance?

Thanks!

if nothing else get a good shift kit for the valve body, it will firm the shifts up and help the converter stay locked in, an aftermarket valve body would be the next step up and installing a GOOD converter will make the stock internals last a long time since the factory converter is crap and creates a lot of heat. get a tranny temp gauge and EGT gauge if you plan on towing a lot, modded or bone stock

Um, to be perfectly correct here - your first comment in red is incorrect. 98 12Vs were available in both 4 door quadcab (suicide type doors) as well as the club cab which didnt have doors.

About the only reason I would own an auto 12v if is I was going to fully build it and use the truck for drag racing.... I just prefer hand shakers.

I know people that have had auto 12v's and never had a problem with the tranny, and then again you find those that do.
