My $0.02 here...
Buy what you like and can afford. Check the maintenance history and past useage of any vehicle you buy and make an informed and logical choice. A truck is a tool. Ask yourself what you will use it for and get the tool you need. 15K isn't much for a truck and mods. Better get a truck you can live with for awhile. They are all good and they all have issues. It just depends on whom you ask at any given time. Expect to pay more in maintenance costs during the time you own it for any repairs or parts that you buy. They last a long time but they ain't always the cheapest way to go.
Not trying to be vague here about a specific brand but we all have our preferences and that's why there are different brands for sale. Get what you like and is in your price range.
Stay safe out there.

Thank so much for the reply. I do own a 2009 2500 sierra ext cab 6 1/2 - Gas. I'd like a diesel as a toy. I have looked at 2001-02 Duramax as an option because they offer the four door short bed which are very goodlooking and reliable. Hopefully I can track one own in my budget.

If you have to pay for it out of your pocket it will run you several thousand. GM extended the warranty coverage for the injectors to 200k miles if I remember right.
Something else you might consider would be an old body style Ford, since you like the 4 door short beds. It won't be the fastest or make the most power without major money invested, but with your budget, you should be able to find something and have enough left over for plenty of mods to make it fun to drive and still be reliable.
