Ive got one of each and they both have their good and bad points. For me, because I live in a pretty cold climate the dynamic timing of the 24V runs a whole lot better in the cold. The 12V is a little more reliable in stock form but if you take care of the few issues the 24V has its just as good, IMO. That, plus you can always P-Pump a 24V if you need to . Its getting hard to find a 12V with a reasonable amount of miles on it.

Thanks for not shooting me as a blasphemer because I don't believe the 12 valve is the only choice out there
The 12 valve has a great reputation that it deserves 100%. I sometimes think though that people get caught up with what makes an engine a good engine for someone else that's not looking for huge horsepower (+600). The 24 valve is proven very reliable with a few tweaks and makes for a great all around engine with good manners for towing in the mountains as well as going to the grocery store.
Bottom line, you can't go wrong either way, it just depends what you want out of it. At the moment I really like my powerstroke the most, but I'm weird and that can change from month to month.
