a lot of people dont give the 24 valve the credit it deserves. i love mine and like creeper said the interior is a lot better in my opinion than the earlier 2nd gens. it all depends on what your needs are. both are great choices but in my opinion i would go with the 24 valve.

for a mild DDer id get a 24v. that way if you ever do have to get tested you can just turn everything off and get tested and away you go. and like said above my dads 01 drives alot better in the COOOOOOLD then my 12v.....now my 12v will run circles around his but his is stock

24v is more tunable by a chip or programmer. inj. pump lubed by fuel=shorter life
12v has alot more cheap horsepower. inj. pump lubed by oil=longer life

my truck is a a DD truck. ive put more miles on it with the 12v then the previous 24v's that were in it. the 24v is a great engine. i would still be running it if it wasnt for dropping a valve at 9,000 miles on a complete cummins rebuild.

as for driving manners, DD i prefer the 12v over the 24v. no u cant turn it up or down with electronics. but i can swap fuel plates in bout 10 minutes, and go from a mild mannered truck, to a 400 plus truck that is one hell of a blast to drive.

there is always a debate on which one is better, which one is more reliable, it all comes down to preference. my preference is the 12v.

like all these guys have said, you really cant go wrong with either one, both are awsome trucks, the only reason i lean towards the 12V is because its more simple, if it wont run right, there is something wrong with it, not a sensor going out or something stupid, but it really boils down to which you like best, no matter what way you go there is pros and cons to every vehicle out there i don't care what it is, just depends on what fits your needs best and which you like better, well good luck!

I feel the same way...just picked up the truck in my sig (98). I like the newer interior, but with the 12V. Finding a QCSB was not easy...For me, though it's a good balance of both things I wanted.

i drive a 24 and i love it even though its had alot of problems i love the interior especially with the quad cab there are a few 12s with the new interior and quad cab those would be good the 12v is a good engine the only problem i know is the kdp and the 24s have it to but the 24s dont vibrate as bad and i dont mean to bring on a fight when i say this but the 24 is a better designed engine as far as airflow a 24 ppumped is the best truck out there i think and the 12 is great dont get me wrong but if u just want something for a daily driver and not a race truck i think the 24 is better i wish i had both but i just love being able program hp into my truck. anyway hope this helped.
