Question how about a cummins

Hello everyone had a quick question. I am in the process of looking for a 2500 4x4 cummins I've always wanted one. So far I have just looked at autotrader and haven't actualy checked any out. There are couple that are really nice but have high miles on them from 120,000 and up . The one has 300,000 on it. I was wondering if the mileage is a problem with diesel powered vehichles. Also what things should I look at on the truck and the motor to know if I'm getting a good deal. any advice would be great thanks.

the cummins should go 300,000 miles or more easy as long as all the maintance was kept current.

Welcome to DB!! You will be pleased with the Cummins. Just a few things you should know probably. It depends on what type of engine and year you want in the truck. These trucks will go a long ways if taken care of properly. 150k is not very much for a diesel and if you get an older 5.9 12v, they are known as the Million Mile Engine. They will have a long life. I would try to stay under 200k if I was you and make sure you have it checked out before you buy it.

The first gens are awesome trucks, mechanical engines, easy to work on, good fuel milage, and has a P7100 injection pump. The P7100 is used on the First and Second Gen 12v cummins and are very reliable pumps. These are cheaper to get parts for and are wonderful engines. Has Dana rear and front axles. Most reliable trucks of the lineup in my opinion.

The second gen 24v are good trucks too. These started the computer controlled engines with the VP44 injection pumps which seem to have the highest failure rate of all the models if not properly cared for. They have a the most limited horsepower range due to the VP44 injection pump. These can be converted to a p-pump for higher horsepower numbers. These also started with the quad cab suicide doors. Equipped with infamous Dana front and rear axles.

The second gen 5 speed transmissions have a notorious problem with a nut backing off and causing you to loose 5th gear.

The third gens started the CP3 Common rail injection system. It is reliable and is capable of large horsepower with fewer upgrades. These have the American Axle Makers axles in them. I own one and vouch for them. Good trucks.

The new 6.7 Dodges are great, powerful trucks. They also have Common rail injection and newer models come with Pizzeo Injectors. Biggest downfall of these trucks are the DPF and EGR systems which greatly restrict the trucks performance and reliability. If you can remove these they are wonderful trucks.

Hope some of this helped. I wish I had known a little more before I had bought mine. Just trying to give you some tools to help with the decision.
