Default 2wd vs 4wd (moving north soon and trying to find a truck)

I'm in the market for an older turbo diesel, I'm not brand specific or really anything specific and I don't care if I have to fly/drive just to go pick up a truck so my options are very open as of right now. My main question is and reason to seek some help is that I'm unsure if I should get a truck with 4x4.

This truck will be used to mainly haul a horse trailer and from time to time will haul our jeep or one of the bimmers. Eventually we'll use it to move us across the country and this is where my trouble is coming from.

Right now we live in the South, we very rarely have snow or road conditions that would require 4x4 unless we were out looking for a reason to use the 4x4. In the next year or so we'll be moving to Washington State or Colorado, both places can have nasty winters, specially compared to what we're use to in the South. My budget right now is $10,000 bc thats the most cash I can pay, I can finance if I need to but I would much rather stay under the $10,000 mark. My wife plays polo so we kind of need a truck that can haul a big goose neck horse trailer. Living in the South I have gotten away with having only 2wd. I use to have an old toyota truck that I lifted 10 inches, put on a really meaty 35, regeard and locked the rear end and I could go to 8/10 places that the big boys would go. I have no desire to lift the truck, so if I buy a 2wd could I just throw an air locker in there and call it good and be able to get through some of those nasty dirt roads? I know these trucks are heavy and sometimes I might have to pull a 10,000lb or more horse trailer but the worst I can forsee myself going through is just nasty backroads that lead to the polo fields and I'm not sure if I'd even need 4wd then. We've had to use the tractor to pull out some of the 2wd trucks pulling heavy trailers but they weren't locked in the rear. I think a locker would make me ok.

I can also get a little bit of a newer and nicer truck if I went 2wd, plus a little bit better on the fuel bill as well. Sometimes I think I need the 4wd but thats just me, my 13 wrangler I just got rid of rarely went into 4wd and if we did use it, then it was a place that a big truck like this would never go. Any help or advice is greatly appriciated.
