Default Turbo Boost Without Intercooler

Hi
I have a 1990 Mitsubishi Lancer 1.8 turbo diesel 4d65-t with a td04-09b turbo. I was wondering how much safe boost as standard I can boost without intercooler. Right now I am getting 9-10 psi. Is it safe? And how can I set the fuel pump to have minimum black smoke please.

Thanks!

you are prolly looking to be safe at 6-7psi with a non intercooled setup..... what turbo do you have? if larger than stock, like a TD04 you might be able to safely get a couple of more pounds out of it but you are playing with borrowed time on the head gasket.

I just called my buddy who is/used to be a Mits tech and he said 4-6psi is about the max. Anything more and the heads gonna let loose. Hope this helps.

Yes, it's a 1990 4d65. The turbo is a TD04-09 and was added recently, maybe a year! Minimum boost is 8-9 psi with the least wastegate rod tension. I can't reduce the boost pressure. Is there another way to reduce pressure?

Thanks for all of your replies.

Got any pics of the wastegate? Can you change or make your own rod for the wastegate to give you more adjustment?
