I can't find it but there's a youtube video of a Mercedes 300TD racing and drifting around a track and it's got I think between 300 and 500 hp.

<- Interview with the owner/racer.

he is using the stock motor out of a 98 E class diesel with an GT40. He is making around 450hp and 800nm he believes, but he has not dynoed it since he has made a few modifications.

To the OP, the big limiter of the OM617 is the injection pump. Stock I have heard of it handling up to 200hp, but there are a few companies that offer upgraded elements for them that will increase the over all fuel flow. Stock the are like 5.5mm or 5mm, cant remember, but there is a company that makes one with 7.5mm elements, which is pretty serious. I am looking at adding an inline fuel pump to bump my fuel pressure some for the time being, because the upgraded injection pump is around $1200. Figure do a few small things and slap a HX35 with an intercooler on it for now, and call it a day, .

Default turning up the I-5 pump

so I'm a diesel newbie and just acquired a 1981 Mercedes 300sd turbo diesel and the PO apparently has the pump turned all the way up and supposedly running 24lbs of boost... stock turbo. is this safe? there is no gauges to monitor the parameters. thanks

If it really is running 24 psi boost and the pump is maxed out, yes, you should be monitoring EGT's. Running with the wastegate disconnected is not smart and possibly may not provide any power gain either. Looks like you have some work to do... or just drive it until it blows up.

Don't forget that engine requires manual valve lash adjustment every 15kmi or so... another fun job.
