1. Heavier crankshaft
2. Oil cooled pistons
3. Larger oil capacity (7qt. non-turbo vs. 8.5qt. turbo) likely for piston cooling
4. Different exhaust valves
Certainly, the turbo 617's have more power, but I also greatly appreciate the SMOOTHNESS of the non-turbo power.....it is like soft butter.

ncof300d...
Nice to see another MB Head around this site.
I am a Noob on this site, too. I have a '02 Ford F-250 7.3 & a '87 Mercedes 300DT. Both are great vehicles, but I have a soft spot in my heart for the Merc.
While the OM617 is a great engine, don't discount the OM 603. They are quick & economical. I regularly get 30 mpg on the highway & have seen as high as 33 mpg (all hand-calculated). And if you aren't careful, it'll spin out on a corner. Of course, the lighter-body of the 300 series helps that.
While I'm at it, I would strongly NOT recommend burning veggie oil in these engines, if you want to keep the car. Straight veggie oil does things to the IP & injectors that you would not believe, not to mention what it leaves in your fuel tank. If you want to use veggie, do the right thing for your engine & convert it to biodiesel. You'll be glad you did!

Hello everyone! Brand new Double Newbie here.....New to MB and new to Diesel. I just inherited my Moms 1984 300SD Turbo when it became a little to much car for her. She ordered it straight from Germany through a broker and lovingly maintained it for over 20 years but kind of let it go the last couple and now it is MINE. She is still running great after all these years and is my daily driver with a 70 mile round trip commute. I really look forward to picking your brains about this grand old girl and turning her into the Baunstormer I think she could be. Who said Diesels have to slow right?!

I hope we can get a little more conversation and tec info running back and forth here I have had an 84 300d for about two months now and have dunn a good bit of work to it. New radiator, rear axles, shocks got the vacume system partally back on line so I can shut the motor down from the inside disconnected the vacume locking sys ,new turn signal switch. I have some issues with the vent and AC sys. So if any one has gone down that road feel free to help me out.

Wow,so a benz made it to the US and is still alive??
Cash for clunker killed a lot of them over here- so bad. Hopefully you treat it good and they will in return life forever- we have some of them with way more than a million mile, because these engines were built in a time were saving was a word barely unkown.
Just take your time you will find a lot of tips and tricks here. Every trick on the big rigs does work on the benz, too. it will be easier as your engine is mechanically controlled.
Don't pimp it to much - it's still a benz and you have to go with style.
Start with more air and a bit more diesel if the engine is in shape to do that.
Make sure oil pressure and compression is fine, after testing that and checking the injectors for spray pattern and release pressure you can start in a new diesel power SD!
Have fun!
