Show me the Cummins they use.

Our old timer does, his office is full of manuals and he even knows how to use his computer to look up digital parts manuals.

I operate construction equipment for a living. I'm not attacking you, just wondering where you came up with the fact that operating is an unskilled trade. I could just as easily call being a mechanic an unskilled trade, seeing as how I restore my own cars, and work on my own antique construction equipment and my pickup. I feel that I have been fairly civilized.

And thats why this company has been in business since the 70s, good planning and overall knowledge of the local industry.

You are comparing apples to oranges.
I'd like to see a truck driver that can carry grade with a finish dozer or a road grader.

I will agree with you that some operators make me shake my head, but you are stereotyping. I'd appreciate it if you had a little more respect for my profession.

I grew up operating equipment. I enjoy it so much I even do it in my free time. I get more hours per week than a diesel mechanic in this area would. If my grandpa didn't start this construction company, I would be a diesel mechanic actually.

Years of observation.

If you have the skills and resources, why settle with being a simple operator? I've come across many "I used to be a mechanic" drivers.
Sh*t operators make good money plus it a great way to make a living. And as far as unskilled trade you have lost your damn mind. Operating is an art form you . You come on here and act like your god's gift to the diesel world. People around here don't take kindly to that.

I have held my tongue on the way you handle yourself but no more. Either help people or find another forum to TROLL!

So what do you want unmaned drivers in this country??? We need em all, Transit, Long Haul, and machine operators, and yes machine opereators can make good money not in denver for the DOT or construction companies but in mines, and ect, THe guys that drive the big *** Cat mining truck make over 100 bucks and hour why, because it takes skill, and saftey to drive those trucks, bet that more than you make at you job, sorry man but this is a lil irritating, just shut it and quite bashing other people jobs, and what they like to do, any body can turn a god damn wrench, it takes skill to know how to repair, thing too, there people that love driving long haul because they get to see parts of the country no one will ever see, If i was to drive for a living I take the long haul over city transit why I HATE THE CITY!!!!!!! just shut it man Im sorry but your about to turn this whole forum against you... You were fine till you stated bashing operators, old timer mechanincs (Which there are many that will have forgottten more than you will ever learn) and the Sacred caterpillar. We also need people that know the old technology because sadly no one has hundreds of millions of dollars to buy brand new excavators, dozers, trucks and ect.... Like me I have a 1970 John deere a 1981 Hesston 1380 DT, and some tractors from the 50's and 60's... You can explain about VGT and Tuning Diesel but hell dont bash Cat!!!! Thank you... Have a great day...

I know you cetified H2-H8 sorry, Im not being an *** by saying that im realy saying good job....

Seriously? Our shop hires C techs at a higher pay than drivers.

For an equipment operator or short-haul delivery driver, maybe.
For long-haul, its boring straight highway for hundreds of miles at a time.
For transit, you have to watch for pedestrians, watch traffic, watch for occupied stops, deal with revenue collection, stick to a schedule down to the minute and deal with passengers (and their BO).

Anyone can take a CDL class and get an operator/driver job. If you can drive a car without killing anyone, you can drive pretty much anything with some training.

Perhaps if you actually knew the difference between the two, or at least read the title of the thread and understood its context, you would also understand that your statement makes no sense.

In my book a driver drives something and an operator operates machinery.

I agree with H.R.D theres a huge difference between drivers and operators and both are needed. I don't even understand how you could even have the audacity to come on here and bash other poeples career choice just because its not what you enjoy doing. especially two that keep people like you in the job. if it wasn't for them breaking stuff, which is inevitable in this type of work, there would be no need for mechanics like you. and why waste your time argueing with unskilled operators who are apparently so inferior to you?

Back to the OP and not the other topic at hand.

Don't get me wrong, Im dead set against smoke tunes, smoking people out, and all that nonsense. But it burns me up how so many people today, diesel owners especially, that will bash another diesel owner if their truck puts out even a little smoke. Its just ridiculous.

You know, I had my truck set up for no smoke. Running no plate, 4k GSK, 35/40 hybrid; AFC housing all the way back, and starwheel very tight. It would put out a barely a haze if floored at low RPM, but you know what, it was laggy. Loosened the starwheel off a little with AFC still all the way back, now it puts out a little cloud if floored at no boost, but spools quick, and cleans up quick.

Is my truck efficient? I can confidently say it is. Does it smoke a little? By God, yes it does.
