If you do the work on your own the cost to drive diesel is still higher, fuel filter, oil change(10 quarts for dmax ) versus 5 or 6 quarts for your gasser.

MMM, I have a new truck and can't do the work myself. Gonna have to ponder this one a while.

My weak attempt at sarcasm. Check out my signature, it's 99 that has been completely reworked top to bottom and the only shop it's seen was when i was on the road and broke down 800 miles from home.

jeep 15,000 mi change it every 3000 = 5 changes 5 X 6(qts. of oil @ 4.00/qt)= 120.0 +
5(oil filters) @ 8.00 = 160.00

Duramax 15,000 Change the oil every 5k= (3 changes@ 32.00/2.5 gallon = 96.00 ) 3(oil filters bought in bulk on sale @ 20.00ea = 60.00) Change the fuel filter once = 40.00

You are already at 200.00 and you have not allowed for the dirt cheap 2 cycle for fuel treatment, and if you live in frigid area anti gelling additive. The difference is not huge but to say maintaining a diesel is cheaper than a gasser is not fact.

i never said maintnence is cheaper. im saying overall (i guess for me anyways?) i end up sinking less money into my tuck then a comparable gas truck. maybe its just because all my friends have performance mods on there gas trucks, less reliability i suppose.

delvac - $12 x 3 = 36 + filter $6 + $42 oil change and 2 quarts left over for my fourwheeler.

max life - $5 x 6 = 30 + $6 = $36 oil change, so a $6 dollar difference in oil changes is probably offset by longer intervals. add an extra $40 for fule filters a year and the diesel is behind. factor in roughly 5-6mpg better and $.30 cheaper for fuel (fuel prices change so much though) and the diesel probably ends up a little cheaper.

but i guess it depends so much on what your comparing to or what kind of diesel your talking about (ie -obviously a 6.0 powerstroke wont be cheaper), plus if you live in colder weather it adds alot of cost, that its not the same for everyone...

what a savings

Ya you can go twice as long or more between oil changes but they hold 3 times the amount of oil when you do an oil change.

Parts wear out faster because they are so much heavier.

If they have to go to a shop, they have to go to the more expensive shops cause normal mechanics don't know what they are doin on these trucks.

These pickup truck versions of diesels are still in the experimental stages of life with new technology improving them all the time but with all these improvements comes more money needed. Gassers have been pretty much time tested and proven for decades.

Last but not least, these Diesel Trucks have to be a labor of love, they aren't for the everyday person just lookin for transport. They are big, bulky and hard to get around in town. I don't know about the rest of ya but it doesn't seem like I ever have this truck just fixed and drivin it, there is always somethin wrong with it waitin to be fixed and I drive my truck easy. It's a work truck/farm truck, not a hot rod. Workin on it is my hobby, it's what I do with my extra money and time.

But cheaper then a gasser overall, not mine.
I can honestly say MY diesel has been cheaper to own and operate so far. I had a Dodge 1500 4x4 Automatic with a 360 in it. When I sold it and bought my Cummins I was spending $17 a day for fuel because I was lucky to get 10-12 MPG AND I had to run Premium in it or it spark knocked so bad. With the Cummins my daily fuel costs dropped no less then $5 a day. The 1500 I had the tranny rebuilt, I have a 5 speed in the Cummins, I have replaced the fuel system on it with an Airdog and the difference in cost between the tranny rebuild and fuel system was well over $1500. And yeah oil changes are pricey, but I dont have to change as often, basically 3 gasser changes to 1 Cummins change. So when I penciled it out the oil changes actually were about even and I dont have as much oil to get rid of since I would use more oil in 3 changes then I do in one on the Cummins. I use my truck for a daily driver as well as work. And as long as I can afford to buy a diesel, I plan to never go back to a gasser.
