Default mechanical Vs ECM

IM new to diesels and own a 84 mercedes benz 300CD. im curious as to if people preffer the old mechanical or the new ECM controlled diesels. please add to why you prefer your selection.

mech. Its simpler, cheaper, easier to work on, my foot tells it what to do and it does it... But newer diesels have their perks as well....

I like simple. Yeah the first gen 24 valves had the computer right on the engine. Mechanical is simple, requires very little electronics to run them. Yeah you can chip the new stuff...easy power on the fly. I prefer turning a screw driver. New stuff has emissions that open a bigger can of worms and just add more to the cost in repairs or adds stuff that can go wrong.

I'll pay the extra few $$$ for mechanical rather than buy new. I am not one who enjoys looking at a rats nest of wires.
