Default Dmax or Cummins

I'm thinking for my next truck i want to get either lbz duramax or 06-07 5.9 cummins. Ive drove many duramaxs both stock and hopped up on efi live and all that fun stuff. I've only drove one cummins and it was stock. What I'm going for is a truck that is fast, powerful and good MPG. I want be able to not smoke and drive efficiently but also to be able to roal some coal and race some cocky kids at school once in a while it kinda helps to have a dsp5 switch for this but cummins doesn't have that yet. So far what I'm thinking about the cummins is basically this their baddass. I've heard they get better mileage. No doubt can pull anything I can hook it up to. I have lots of questions about the cummins like with CAI 4" turbo back and a smarty jr can i keep up with a dmax? Will I hafta worry about the tranny blowing up? My main problem with a cummins vs a duramax is that cummins doesn't have dsp5 switch like the dmax do. Once you've drove a dmax with efi live its hard to enjoy a truck without it. I know enough about the dmax you dont need to tell me much about them I know quiet a bit about them but I'm trying to decide if the cummins a better truck or what. Sorry for the long post if you can answer any of my many questions i would appreciate it.Thanks

My 2 cents I would go Dmax. But EFI can be used for Dodges also, put multiple programs on that. I like my Fords. So I say find one you like and buy it!

I have 2 cummins myself, both '02. both stick 5spd and 6spd with the HO. My 3/4ton has diablo power puck and fass pump. 1 ton HO is stock with fass pump. My boss has 3 cummins first gens. '93 and 2 '92s. all 1 ton duallys and all get worked hard all day long evry day til sunday. The one is at 894,000 Miles!!!! all auto. not a one has gone bad. My buddy just bought a Dmax. no doubt hands down faster than my cummins. But I also have stick.( need to build boost each shift). But that truck is in and out of the shop. I just put injectors in it the winter. he let them go to long and melted a hole in pistons 1 and 5. I dont have much experience with dmax, but they have left a bad taste in my mouth. ive heard bad and good about them. but the cummins is tried and true. Also the guy down the rd has 2 cummins. both 07. 1 tons. Thats a good truck. no complaints. and he is a 323,000 mi on one and the other is 288,000 i think. no complaint yet. My experience is kinda bias due to i just always was a cummins guy. But if you want fast, go dmax. you want tq go cummins.

scrappiron68 pretty much hit the nail on the head. I'm a Cummins guy also, but all other things being equal (driver, $$ spent on mods), the Duramax will probably always be quicker in the quarter. Cummins trucks rule at things like sled pulling, where the low end grunt gives them an edge. If you plan to do much heavy towing, you might like the Cummins better. If you will be driving it around empty most of the time, you'll probably really enjoy the RPM that you get with the Dmax. Can't go wrong with either one really, just have to decide what you want it to do and which one fits your needs better.
