2003 Crewcab Cummins conversion
Ok, I have a few question sfor you Ford guys.
I found a good candidate for a Cummins swap - its a 2003 F-250 with a tired 5.4 (I believe). Its an auto and it has less than 150k on it.
I also found leather seats from a 2002 and door panels and the rest of the interior from a 2006. Are these pieces interchangeable with the 2003 interior?
Also, what tranny will this truck have? How much will it cost to build it to hold 500-600 hp??
Thanks.

Also, who makes a good looking Ranchhand style bumper?

If you're putting a cummins in, I'd buy a trans to match, it will save you in the long run vs. trying to build a weaker trans, and then getting a controller for it. Better off using whatever is attached to the 5.9 (if it is). What motor are you thinking of using?
I'm not sure what trans comes in the 5.4's, I doubt it's the 5R110 though. Even if it is, at 550-600hp out of the cummins... I'd just get a 47re or a NV of some sort. The 5R110's hold a lot of power... behind powerstrokes. Just mismatched to the cummins power output.
Look at destroked.com for adapter plates if you want to use a different trans than a Dodge setup, and use their motor mounts and such, they have the best stuff. I've heard horror stories about fordcummins stuff...
2006 interior pieces should work fine, as for the 2002 seats, I THINK they will work, worst case you need to make some brackets... which shouldn't be hard for a guy who's doing a motor swap.

Thanks Mike, Im thinking about a p-pump but I wouldnt mind a common rail (although Im not sure I would want to tackle the wiring). Theres also the legality issue of putting an older engine into a newer truck. I wouldnt want to go therough all that work and expense and not be able to register the truck in the future because it has an older engine in it.
I was guessing on the 5.4L engine. I dont really know whats in there.
Im just thinking/gathering info at this point. We have a newer edition to the family and my quad cab just isnt big enough anymore and cant really justify the expense of a megacab....
Thanks for the heads up on the Ford Cummins stuff - I was thinking about using them because they are fairly local to me. I may just get the how-to book from them.

You would also need a PCS controler for the Ford tranny which adds about $600 more to the cost.

Swapping the dash would be a pretty major ordeal, Ford did a major interior change in 2005, dash is completly differant. Same with the door panels. Here is a picture of a 2005 interior I robbed off CL...

Agreed on the Destroked...

Wasnt even considering the dash. But I was hoping the door panels were useable.
The truck is priced right at around 4k and the leather seats and interior are $800 obo. I would prefer a stick but this truck happens to be an auto...Have to go and take a look at it.
Whats the cost of building a 5R110? a 47Re build inst super cheap but at least I wouldnt have to mess around with a trans controller.

5r110 would be ball park 5k to build... But I am not entirely convinced it would be a 5r110.

$5500 to do a full build 5R110 from NADP, who is the shop I would use.
I'm fairly certain the door panels will fit without issue, the dash, yes, would be a PITA. I've seen 08 door panels in these body style trucks too, bolt in deal.
5R110 is a great trans, but even built they never seem to hold to the torque the cummins has. I think it will just take too much to get it suited for that lower RPM power, where the V8 it's normally attached to revs a lot higher and can use the gears more. It doesn't really seem like anyone has perfected the stand alone controller for the 5R110 either. The 4R100 is a different story, I would seriously weigh the costs of building that E4OD into a built 4R100, they can be converted. I'd talk to either BTS (brians truck shop), John Woods, or Doug @ GoGo, he's a guru with Ford trans' too.
A common rail would be my first choice for a swap, but agreed, it will be more tedious. You'll want the 05 motor, it's the most sought after for this swap, less wiring. Talk to Ryan Bean about it like Joe said, they've got this thing down pat, they swap a ton of trucks and they've even done quite a few 6.7 cummins swaps too.
To add to the 47RE build, it will be cheaper no matter what. Figure they're both $5k to build... for the Ford trans behind the cummins you'll need the PCS controller, the billet flexplate from destroked which is another $800 or so, and any other misc. junk to make that work behind that motor, and for what? That trans was never designed to be behind those low RPM motors like that. Don't get me wrong, the 5R110 is my favorite auto put behind a diesel pickup today, but I think if I was doing a commonrail swap, I'd be ditching it. I'd probably go 4R100 over the 5R110 in fact. Just for simplicity. 4R100 is far less electronically controlled than a 5R. Plus the 4R is rock solid once they're built.
