For You 6.4 2008 Ford Guys
#11
A V-serise engine will always take up a little more room than a I-6. I have looked a a lot of new class 5 on up trucks and they are packing so much emision crap in there that there is hardly any room even with a tilt up hood. But we are all in the same boat with the DPF on the tucks and hopefuly we can get "around it".

i think the 6.0 got a lot of the bugs worked out of it by the end and is probably a decent motor once you get passed the stigma. the 6.4 really hasn't had all that rocky of a start. people are just looking for things to go wrong and focusing on them.
i think sooner or later you're only going to see V type motors due to weight savings and packaging requirements. take a look at what's going in the new dodge 1/2 tons.....
if you don't think the duramax is good motor and a powerful contender in the diesel scene you might want to read up a little bit more on it. that motor is deadly and it's poised to be the top diesel pretty quick.

Will you ever see all V-8 light duty diesels? You already have, the Cummins is rated as a medium duty engine, not a light duty like the Powerstroke or Duramax. Will it ever go by the wayside in a Dodge? Possibly, in a few decades, but not for the next few years. The I-6 design may be heavy, but its also more efficient, and much stronger by design, it even has 30% fewer moving parts. The reason Dodge and Cummins are going to a V-8 design in the new 1500's is because of packaging, and what the truck swill be used for. It doesn't need stump pulling torque, it needs smooth, linear power with an emphasis on horsepower, not torque... We all know a V-8 is better for revving than an I-6.
Whoever says the Duramax is a junk motor hasn't been around for more than 5 minutes... It is an excellent engine, capable of making big numbers on the dyno. Will it ever be superior/top dog in the diesel world? Its hard to believe... With more moving parts, fewer load bearing crank connections (main bearings), and a much more complicated valve train than the Cummins motor it will be a bit more than a challenge to take over top spot.
If guys were investing the same amount of money in the Cummins development as the Duramax guys have been throwing at them, we'd have a real contest. But lately, the Duramax crowd has been throwing millions of dollars at trying to claim top spot. It doesn't help that they get a a new computer system every few years, which seems to slow down they're process.

Hmmm
Thats possibly the dumbest thing I've ever heard... Both the 6.0 no and the 6.4 were originally designed to be V-6 engines, not V-8's, they're blocks are designed with 2 extra cylinders slapped on... Not anything I'd want to hear if I owned one. The other problem is you have to pull the cab off to work on it! Are you kidding me? That's the worst bit of Ford engineering since the Pinto!
