wanting to convert '05 Ranger Edge to diesel
I been looking for a howto to convert a 2005 Ford Ranger Edge (or other all electronically controlled vehicle) to another motor such as a Cummins 4BT. I bet i will need to regear it quite a bit. it is about to need a rebuild anyway. may also chase a portal axle if new rear end is needed. has anyone done a decent howto for such a vehicle as this?
I did some searching and the 4BT kept coming up as a good motor to use. while I'm concentrating on the 4BT for now as a functional model, my main question is what all will i have to change out to have this truck roadworthy. Emissions of no concern as i live in Alabama. may use other motors once I know more about what I need. Found a couple offerings from Isusu and where somebody stuffed a (too small) Kubota in a truck like mine. No technical though.
It seems like the 4bt is a good platform, but often times noisy and shakes the whole truck. Not saying it's a bad choice, but I see a lot of guys use the 5 cylinder mercedes motors too.
What do you mean road worthy? What's the truck look like now that it's going in? Going to have to do something to balance the weight a bit, definitely going to have to figure out how to keep the front end up with that heavy motor up there.

Basically i want to know what all i have to change out so that red line top gear is around 100mph, not 40mph and make sure everything works. So far more agressive suspensions haven't been that hard to find though i would appreciate some help choosing springs. that's later though. right now i'm trying to research the concept before i go to stuffing parts in. it may still be a couple years before i do it assuming my current transmission holds up. i want it to all fit without modifying the frame, firewall, or the appearamce of the truck drastically (short of obvious hop-ups like a hood scoop). Also aren't 4BT's used a lot in FedEx trucks? What are some other common motors around that size found on pavement alot?
if i was to, say, use a 3.0L Mercedes power plant I'm looking at (redline around 6000 rpm looks like), think i may have to put in a stronger power train or do u think a stock Ford powertrain would hold? Also looking for how to control it. cable throttle and electronic tranny.
