Default EGT's too high

So I'm new to this forum and diesel ownership as a whole. I have an 02 7.3L with an AFE stage 2 cold air intake, BD turbothrust turbo, and a DP tuner. Right now on average my EGTs on the highway are around 800 degrees. However, as soon as I go to tow a sedan on a car trailer behind it, every little hill puts my EGTs at 1200 degrees. Is there anything besides water meth injection I can do to bring those numbers down?

Do you have an exhaust kit on it?

From personal experience I know my DP tuner ran hotter than my PHP tunes. Just food for thought.

Also, try eliminating one thing at a time. Try putting on a 6637 or stock filter for a while and see if its the filter (shouldnt be). Also, it could be that your IC has a blockage, those can be cleaned out.

Bigger intercooler? Every degree you can drop the intake temperature you also can drop the exhaust temps by the same amount.

I do think you do run out of air. Easy to explain. If your engine can not burn all the fuel due to the tuner EGT's start to rise.

as A/O already mentioned check the filter, the intake and the exhaust! A dent in the exhaust can have fatal effects like you described.

Down shift.

Very simple and cheap way of lowering EGT's. Your truck should be turning 2500 RPM's when pulling a load on any kind of hill.

If you have EGT issues on the flats I would check your up pipes, and for turbo boost leaks.

What boost levels are you reaching?

Where is your pyro probe?

1200 doesn't sound to bad but depends on the hill and how heavy you tow. i run 1300 all day long, i weigh 18,200 empty with my air ride 40' flatbed, grossing upwards of 25k or so on average with sometimes over 30k loaded. let out of the throttle and downshift as said...

I had a similar experiencxe as A/O. I ran a DP tuner for 4 yrs and everyone said my egts seemed normal; so I left it alone. I always knew something was not right. I just got PHP tunes a few months ago and all my EGT issues went away. I honestly think your issue is in your tunes, but there could be some items that are contributing.
800 on the highway is high. If your going on an uphill slope, the 800 isn't too bad, but still a little high.
With my PHP tunes From Colorado to Lead hill, Arkansas I mainly ran around 500deg. Up hill slopes along the way were around 600 and sometimes 700 in the Ozark Mountains.

How much did your load weigh? 1200 seems excessive for pulling a car on minor slopes.

I would check for exhaust leaks and boost leaks. If you do not have leaks; then its definitely in your tunes.

Best of luck

Sorry for the late reply, I've been swamped at work. Ya I am pretty sure its my tunes because when it starts running too hot I switch it back to stock and it solves most of the problem. My exhaust is 5 in MBRP dual (not a true dual) and it is leak free. I'm going to check out my boost and intake for leaks later this week and try switching the filter.

As far as my boost I'm sitting between 5 and 10 psi normally with a trailer. My probe is before my turbo. I was advised when I bought the BD turbo not to run higher than 1200 otherwise I could ruin it. I haven't had any experience with these turbos so I don't know if it can handle more or not.

The trailer weight was right around 6000 lbs. I didn't get a specific weight but it was a small 14 foot trailer and a compact car.

Thanks for the help guys.

Your exhaust after your turbo is not what you need to look at. Check your UP PIPES, which go from the manifold to the turbo. They tend to leak there which is what I suspect is causing most of your issues right now.

Your 5-10 psi is just flat towing or under hard accel/hills?
