I have yet to have an issue with that.. want to know my secret for this?

i keep an old BFG Radial t/a from a conversion van i had at one point, and when i gotta haul something, i put the tire between the front bedwall and the object being hauled. that tire is 10.5" wide, so that gives me a safety buffer all the way around the stacks. then i just ratchet strap the item down and we are good to go!!! it works for me, and I have hauled 3 sectionals, 5 sofas, a futon and tons of other household items (no not all at the same time) with no damage from the stacks nor damage from soot.
