ok so ive had both so here are my opinions (had the 6.0 for 4 years got a 7.3 in nov)

6.0
got more power stock and seems to have more power when tuned
exhaust sounds good bc its mostly turbo till higher rpms
egr has to go if you are gunna do anything other than exhaust and intake and probly should go if ur gunna leave it stock
they blow HG when modded so if you wanna build power ur gunna wanna go in and do studs
all around good truck once the problems are solved i just got a lemon and couldnt keep up with the problems any more so i sold it

7.3l
less power but feels a lot more stout
some factory recalls that need to be taken care of so if you get it take it to the factory and make sure they have been taken care of.
trucks from i think 01-03 or maybe 02-03 dont remember have PMR that limit you to 400ish hp to the wheels some ppl push more but everything ive heard says much over 400 isnt that safe
all around no major problems with my truck that the previous owner or myself didnt cause (he destroyed the front end by never checking the bushings and i blew the trans)

over all they are both good truck 7.3l IMO is a better truck from the factory where as the 6.0 will need some work to make it reliable

oh and as for the stuff to look for just the typical stuff...
trans slipping/any leaks

onthe 7.3l pop the hood and look for any soot/oil on the turbo/y pipe

If you get a 6.0 that hasn't had the egr cooler delete the would be the first thing I did to it. If the egr cooler leaks it puts water in the engine and can easily over heat the engine and blow head gaskets. With a stock engine and an egr cooler delete very few of them will blow head gaskets.

A friend also did the egr delete but he still blew head gaskets and fried a turbo on the 6.0. He is a farmer/produce-feed store owner that pulls hay and produce 2-3 times a week. But his 7.3 which may be a tad slower and nosier keeps on going. He keeps everything stock. He is looking for another 7.3.

like they said the 6.0 is ok in terms or reliability bone stock but i blew the hg running a superchip intake and exhaust and went through 4 or 5 coolers in 100k. so honestly even if your just doing a low power tune id still consider spending the money up front for the peace of mind...just my 2 cents though

I worked for a supply company for a few years 05-06 and we had a set of f550 6.0 trucks that were constant headaches, I hear that they worked out a lot of bugs since then. I have always heard good things about the 7.3 diesels.
