Default 01 7.3 hard start, smoke

Howdy fellas,
I have an 01 f350 7.3. if the truck sits over night it pumps out a large cloud of blue/gray smoke and smells like fuel real heavy. If it sits for a couple days it will start very hard, I let the glow plugs heat up and when I crank it over it sounds like it is going to fire and then it sputters and quits trying to start and i can crank it over for ever and it will not try to fire again until I cycle the key, sometimes I only have to cycle the key once and sometimes I have to do it 15 times. Any Ideas would be appreciated. thanks.

Could be a bad GPR... Time to do some testing... This thread might help you.

ya that was my first thought but it will acgt the same way when it is -10 or +65 I am thinking it may be a leaking injector, but with the kind of fuel pressure I am told these run I dont even know if that is a possability

Howdy,
Well this morning it took 15 min to start the old girl, same old thing it cranks great trys to fire and then it just cranks for ever ubtil the ignition is cycled. i checed the gpr after work and found it appears to be wroking properly and there is no voltage drop accross the relay. The only diffrence this morning was that there was alot more white/gray smoke. What is a BUZZ test on the injectors and does it make sence that it may be the injectors? Thanks guys.

Does it run good once its started?

How long do you leave the glow plugs on before starting it?

How cold is it where you are?

after it starts it has a very prononced misfire for just e few seconds and then it runs great, good power, still getting about 17 mpg and i drive this truck 75 miles every day. Other than starting it runs great. then glow plugs run at first for about 50 sec- 1min the light goes out and hit the switch. it was 30 degrees here last night but I plow with it in the winter and it started right up all winter long. this fall I had the engine out replacing the turbo up pipes and the engine oil pan gasket, 3 mounths after that it died while driving, I blew the oil feed hose to the drivers side cyl head, I installed a new hose and that was the last work I have done to the truck. Late last summer early fall I got some advice from cspid and replaced my injector cups do to the cooling system being full of fuel. I dont know if I could have screwed somthing up durring any of these repirs but there is my history. thanks for your help

I just had a brilliant Idea!!!! I walked outside and plugged the truck in it is 32 degrees and snowing right now so if it starts up in the morrning I will know it has somthing to do with the glow plugs or relay> WOW sometimes the simpilest thing is sitting right in front of you but you cant see it because you overthink everything. I will let you know what happens in the am

Let us know. I would say its either Glow plugs or GPR.

Plugging it in does not rule out much of anything, just makes it easy to start... My glow plugs are working fine, but I have a low compression/injector issue on a few cylinders so I plug it in... That way I can jump in and drive off in the morning rather then wait 10 minutes for the cylinder to light off...

I guess that make sense, I will see what happens if it does not smoke then I would think it is less likely to be injectors leaking and more likely plugs or gpr, but mabey I am chasing my tail. I will also measure the glow plugs in the morrning with an ohm meter. I think .8 -1.2 is good but lower than that is bad and abviously if they are open I will find cspids tech file to be sure.

I am also thinking about up grading my injectors for alittle more power, It sounds like alot of you guys are running diffrent injectors. Is there a good injector I can run keeping in mind this is a 237,000 mile bone stock truck.

IMO, Fix the problem before getting injectors... But something to decide upon before getting injectors is what is your power goal and what you use the truck for. Then decide what size injectors based on that.

In the summer I have a 10ft pickup camper and I pull a 1979 f250 built for rock crwling and trail riding. In the winter I plow snow, I do not often require more power but at times pulling up a steep grade or pushing 8 plus inches of snow. my goal is to increase power just enough to make it easier on the truck those couple, three dozen times a year. I am not looking to break any speed records or win any races I just need a tough reliable rig to get some work done and have a little fun.
