Default Rusted Oil Pan 2002 7.3 Powerstroke F350

I have a friend with the rusted oil pan. Oil leaks thru the sidewall of the pan. Dealer and garages say that the engine has to be removed to remove, seal, and replace the pan - about $1450. He has heard that you can do the job without engine removal. Anyone have any experience with this? Like a step-by-step how to would be GREAT!

How about any other suggestions? He heard of using JB Weld but doesn't think it will be reliable because of the heating/cooling cycles of the engine.

Ya there are some people so afraid of pulling the motor that they cut the cross member out and try and do it in the truck. Its just dumb. You will have leaks later on doing it that way, the only way to do it properly is to flip the motor and keep oil off the sealant while it cures.

Pulling the motor is not that hard.

$1400 is pretty cheap...

You can use JB weld but it is only A temp fix ar best. I used JB Weld for 2 years but altimatelly the engine had to come out! Hear is A picture of mine. The black part of the pan Is what I fixed with JB weld notice how rusted the rest of the pan is. It would not of lasted anoughter winter. LOL THE ENGINE HAS TO COME OUT TO REMOVE THE PAN!!!!

was talking to my necahnic about this today. yes it has to be removed..... well i guess you could pull the cab off, then roll the chassis and motor to another lift and pick the motor up high enough to take the pan off while dangerously working under a hanging motor.....

i think pulling it is the easiest way....

Engine probably has to come out, but you might look into taking it loose and jacking the thing up and see if the clearances are there to pull the pan. I have an 85 with the 460 gasser--formerly diesel--and you can just barely get the pan off by jacking the engine up and doing a lot of swearing. Best solution is just unhook the sucker and jerk it out though.

Cant be done without removing the frame cross member... You have the oil pick up and the crank to clear... Not to mention it will not seal properly without flipping the motor.
