Default Just bought a 7.3 powered truck, anything special to look out for?

it is a 01 F-450 7.3 6 speed 2wd 146k miles, just bought it yesterday and I want to go over it with a fine tooth comb because my uncle is going to take it to Texas in about a week. the truck feels low on power but that is compaired to my dodge or mitsubishi so I figure it might need a fuel filter to help wake it up a little unless my expectations of this truck is just too high, here is my list of things to check or change:

fuel filter
oil and filter
trans fluid
gear lube in rear end
coolant
hoses
belts

it has 2 new batteries and alternator and the glow plug relay looks newer too, anything else I should check that is special to power strokes?

Well, just for comparison, a couple months ago at a pull my 02 F250 weighed 8050 with me in it, no hangin weight or balast.

So that 450 is a heavy beast. It's probably not any weaker than any other 7.3, but new filters certainly couldn't hurt. 146k is nothing though. Also, these HEUI's run better with clean oil. I change mine every 3000 religiously.

Get your hands on a gray CPS and keep it in the glove box, and there shouldn't be much else to worry about.

It wouldnt hurt to give it a fresh oil change i agree. I went to a full synthetic 5-40 and love it! That heavy of a work truck could use the least amount of resistance in the drive train fo sho. Id put it in the tranny and diffs also. If it isn't chipped ( i bet not) that is another thing id do. With all that extra weight, hell ya. I run a edge evolution, not a bad tune for an over the counter tune. Plus if you get codes for any reason it will tell you what it is so you dont have to pay a dealer or mechanic do diagnose it for you. You could put it on the 60hp safely with out the exhaust mods.

Welcome to the site!!!

Why dont you start a new thread by clicking the thread button at the top left of the forum...

Glow plugs are not tough to do, have to pull the valve covers and go from there. Why do you think you need to replace the glow plugs???

Hard to say... I have driven 7.3's for 270k without replacing a glow plug.

Need to test the glow plug relay first. I would guess that is your problem.
