Default truck's having some trouble

so my truck recently started to have a hard time starting up. when i go to start it it takes a lot longer to actually fire up and it sounds like it keeps loosing power or something. i had the batteries checked and the dude said they were good, but he was kind of a dumbass it seemed so im not sure if i trust what he was telling me. it got worse today and my service engine light came on. it has been really hot so im thinking its the batteries cause the truck runs fine once it actually starts up.

i just wanted to see if you guys had any input before i go take it to the shop and probably end up spending way too much money

Batterys would be my guess, once running its fine? You have a Battery gauge in the cab, watch it...

If you replace one, replace both...

well yeah once its running it is fine and the battery gauge is reading the same as it always does which is good.. one of the mechanics i work with said it sounds like a pre-pump??? for the fuel or something..im hoping its just the batteries but i dunno

You could check the fuel pump, but they dont cause issues for start up... just top end issues.

There is no "pre" pump, there is only a fuel pump.
