So basically a chip is like a thumb drive that plugs into the trucks PCM (computer) and then uploads its paramators into it instead of the stock ones?

Yes and no... The chip overrides the PCM. The truck is running off the chip, not the PCM.

Oh so the chip is like a whole seperate PCM for certain things regarding to the engine's operation characteristics. I see now! Thanks.

Actually, you were right the first time, farmingsthelife.

The chip simply overrides the internal PCM operational memory. A chip is simply memory....that's it.
