Default 7.3 Help

I have a 99' f250 7.3 super duty. First time diesel owner for about 10 months. I was driving to work the other day and the truck just dies. Thru some trouble shooting, it turned out to be the fuel bowl heater shorted out and blew the fuse. So, I took out the heating element and was able to get home after that. Then I get a new element which wasn't the same one that came out of the fuel bowl. The one that was in it was the flat style and not the tube style that I replaced it with. Seemed to install just fine and took care of the fuse blowing problem and sudden shut down. I get it all back together and purge the fuel bowl as to make sure I don't get any air in the system. I fire it up and it starts right up with no problem. I pull it out of the garage and park it. A few hours later I start it up and let it run for about 5 minutes, then take off. I get thru 2nd gear(manual trans) and it falls on its face, hard. Limp it back and it just barely wants to run. I'm at a loss as what the cause could be. Did I do something wrong or did I end up get a bunch of air in the system some how? Please, any takers on this one?
