Default is mechanic bs sing me when he says that the water separator is built into the fuel f

is the mechanic bs ing me when he says the 7.3L 2000 ford f350 diesel filters include the water separator? Everything i have read says you have to install one.
The mechanic claims to be a heavy drinker on his off time and wants to know why everyone isnt one also, or why I dont! rather!!

My 99 had one from the factory, I can't remember if it was part of the fuel filter assembly, or a seperate container. I did learn not to use aftermarket fuel filters, they can short out the fuel heater, which also shuts down the truck. Had to unplug the fuel heater, thow in another fuse to get it to the dealer.

It was a company vehicle, so we had to take it to one of those quick lube places for maintence, the filter and cap are built together, and replace as a unit, the dealer said the cap shorted out the heater (don't know how, but I think the heater is built into the top of the filter housing) I think all they did was replace the filter and cap with an OEM.

The location was in the owners manual in the truck, it is a yellow lever behind the fuel filter canister,
