Default loss of power and smoke issue

i have a 2000 7.3 five speed, just recently it started acting up driving down the road. it would start surging and loosing power, it was smoking white and sounding like it was back firing. i push in the clutch and it starts idling weird and dieing. i pull the sending unit out of the tank and clean it put it back in and it will run good for a little while and then start doing it.its got some dirt in the tank but idk.
i replaced the lift pump and it didnt fix it. anyone have any ideas i need to fix this i gota drive it to work.

yeah i replaced the fuel filter, oil isnt too bad its still pretty clean. could used changed i guess it looks like its kinda thin. does the oil have to be thick to make the hpop work correctly? today i dropped the tank out cleaned it all out and put fresh fuel in. still does it, will drive down the road fine and after awhile it hesitates and starts bogging down and sounding like its back firing while puffing giant clouds of white smoke. im at a loss....
