Default Yr.Mo. "Early '99" vs. "Late" Yr. Mo. '99

I'm "Goin' Oil Burner", and in the process of doin' so have a "prospect" wantin' to trade My '99 K-3500 LS "King Cab" Gen 6 454 "GAS" w/A.T. ~ KLEEN @ exactly 100,007 K. Mi. ~ straight-across for a '99 F-350 "Super Duty" 4 w.d. w/7.3 PowerStroke Turbo-Diesel "SuperCab" w/M.T. ~ THRASHED @ 237k. mi. for having pulled 6-Horse 5th-wheel Trailers, etc.

For condition/Mileage/Etc. they "Book" relatively close...My main reservation in doing the trade lies in that "Early '99 vs. Late '99" concern regarding use of the newer 17 degree High-pressure oil pump (vs. 15 degree on '94 1/2 to early '99 models), and too, that the (late) '99 1/2 has Forged Rods and other durability charecteristic not applicable to the "Early" '99 Yr. Mo. F-350 SuperDuty...and pray-tell whut else : ?

I'm hoping those otherwise MUCH more knowledgeable than Myself regarding all-things "PowerStroke" can help me understand the difference ~ if there's really one to be concerned with here : ?

I had a "Ford Friend" (Former Fo.Mo.Co. "Tech" claiming he's more knowledgeable of STOCK than MODIFIED application ; ) check it out with a Drive-Test yesterday... 'n he liked it A LOT, say'n "This Truck runs like a freakin' Stripped-Ape on STEROIDS!".

BUT it does-so with more than just a little black-smoke out-the-pipe ~ 'least 'till the turbo spools...otherwise it starts easily w/NO SMOKE 'n Idles as-such too, and doesn't make any strange noises (at least according to HIM), but he swears that it's been "Chipped" or "Programmed", and we didn't have a scantool to verify that : ?

The PowerStrokes Owner want's my truck because it's an A.T that's easier to drive (with a smaller 2-Horse 5th Wheel Trailer in-tow they're now to use) and wants me to confirm the trade next week...any suggestions from the likes of You experienced PowerStroker NUTZ here @ Diesel Bombers ~ of which I'm well on-track to become myself ~ would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Read some of the stickys in the threads above...

94.5 to 2000 all have Forged rods, not sure where your getting the 99.5 change? Not that it matters at stock HP levels.

15* to 17* pump really makes little differance until you go with larger injectors. A 17* pump is a direct swap on a E99...

There are a bunch of front end things that are different, but nothing to get worked up about.

Default Trans is awful noisy in Neutrel...otherwise shifts 'n drives OK : ?

We're supposed to swap-pinks tonite...and though I really liked My '99 K3500 w/7.4 liter "Gen 6" gasser, I'm not having too-bad of a case of post-swap dissonance for what I've experienced so-far of the 7.3 liter PowerStroke GRUNT! : D

My only real concern with this truck right now is the 6-speed Manual Transmission needing Rebuild/Replacement...

While checkin' out the 4 w.d. Op (The front-hubs don't engage in "Automatic" BTW) I dropped the clutch @ Idle in reverse and the truck crawled completely unimpeeded up a 45 degree slope...and I wasn't even in "LOW" range! I found out the Hubs only work in "LOCK" when I got half-way up and the rear-tires started spinning away with Me/Truck just stayin' in that one-place WITH the engine still Idling away comepletely unimpeeded for the load!

Question: The Trans is pretty noisy in Neutrel, indicating worn Mainshaft Bearings, etc., which I'll verify soon with further diagnosis, but if it needs to be rebuilt/replaced, should I keep the 6-speed it has or swap it for the (Std. Option) 5 speed?

Is one stronger/more durable than the other?

If the "Low" is lower and/or the 6th gear "Over Drive" is taller (than 1st. 'n "Final" of the 5-speed) then I'm inclined to keep it...I'm lookin' to swap-in 19.5 Super Singles for the "Dually" setup, as taller tires than what's there "Stock" offer improved tire longevity/durability, a better "Roll" ratio over the likes of Curbs, etc., and finally (pun intended ; ) a taller final-drive gear further complementing what installing a larger Wheel assembly offers toward Fuel Economy, no : ?

Unless 19.5's over-ride the brakes too-bad to consider the change, if the 6-speed has both lower 1st. and taller "Final" should I keep it, or am I just doing a lot of "Rowing" for the close-ratios it offers over the 5-speed : ?

The 6 speed manual is the only Manual tranny offered in the F series with the 7.3... Its a pretty tough tranny in the stock truck, even up to about 400hp.

Rebuild it if it needs it.

Default Got Link... : ?

Sometime AFTER I recover from the the 4 w.d. "Automatic Locking Hub" front-end Axle repairs (hopefully being discussed elsewhere of here) that I'm making right now, I'll look to service the rest of the Power Train...that said, "Spec" calls-out Synthetic ATF, but is that the best fluid to put into these 6-speed Manual Transmissions and their Transfer Cases?

A friendly Trans-shop owner told me several years ago that he replaces the ATF specified with "Good quality Motor Oil" in most of the manual transmissions His shop rebuilds, and a discussion of that Topic -- in this forum and others too -- has also escaped me finding it : ?
