time for another newbie question.
I was wondering what would be better a Edge programmer or a Banks six position four bank chip. Now I don't do much hauling with my 4x4 F350. I just want some extra fuel milage and the ability to get up and go when needed. Mostly city driving with the occasional 400mile express way trip about every other weekend. I was told if ya chip or program a diesel you can get 20miles a gallon and smoke the tires doing it. I can't with my stock 1997 7.3 but would like to so any suggestions would help thanks.

You were told incorrectly. You might pick up a little MPG's but MPG's are directly related to how you drive and obviously if you're looking to smoke the tires, you aren't helping yourself any...
As for a power adder, I would look into a TS chip myself... I dislike Edge and wouldn't pay Banks for their pride.

banks is WAYYYYYYY overpriced for what you get, mileage doesnt increase too much and the power is blahhh...
edge destroys transmissions in these trucks unless you can somehow tune them to be a little more transmission friendly...
with just a tuner or downloader, your not gonna see 20mpg, especially towing. my advice is an intake, exhaust (with downpipe), and a dptuner with a good towing tune, ts chip, or a ts with wildman tunes. theres three of the best in the industry. with the truck unloaded and not going over 70 (mileage seems to drop off over 70) you might see 19mpg.
heres what i have, i can get 21 highway unloaded with my 97 crew cab long bed single rear wheel.
custom intake, mbrp 3" downpipe to 4" straight pipe, dptuner with a 60hp "highway" tune (among others for fun ) hpx ss crossover line (highly recommend! made one hell of a difference) and i bumped the pressure in the fuel regulator (which i can gladly show you, takes 2 minutes), trans cooler, bigger trans pan (keep trans fluid cool, didnt really see a mileage gain from that) and a valve body with bully dog oversized valve and springs (saw 1mpg, easy to install).

i drive 700miles one way to college in northwest ohio from connecticut and back, usually set the cruise on 70 (mind you this is with 33x12.5" tires) i get 17-19mpg. with stock size tires i saw 20-21mpg.

dieseldanboy- you are saying that it's easy to install a bully dog valve body??? Doesn't the trans have to be dropped??
Edge and Banks are crap. Well, Banks isn't so much crap as it is totally overpriced. I can help but laugh at people with Banks stickers all over their trucks thinking they are hot stuff.
You are driving an 8k lb truck.. its not going to haul or get good mileage. But you can get more power by doing a dp, exhaust, intake, and tuner.

i'd say total installation, dropping the pan, and valve body out, taking valve body apart, putting it back together (3 springs and a valve), putting it back in, and putting the pan back on it took me a couple hours
but this is because i installed a MAG-HYTEC pan at the same time. the bolt holes were not threaded all the way through on the transmission case and i had to re-tap every hole because the bolts supplied with the pan were longer.
but i'd say probably 2 or 2.5 hours to get it all set. actually doing the work was very easy.

i got it from xdp.com, they had it the cheapest and shipping was fast. i think i paid like $58 or $68 or something like that. take a look it was cheap
