Default VGT 7.3?!?!?!?!

ok, i keep reading about people putting vg turbo's (variable geometry) on 7.3 psd's.... some off series 60 detroits, which are still garretts, holset's off cummins, borg warner, and so on.

HAS ANYBODY HAD ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS?!?!?!

my goal is a daily driver and a weekend puller, that can handle highway driving. im looking for 40 to 70 psi of boost. obviously doing valve springs, fire rings, and studs.

where are you hearing this? there have been a couple people who have done it but its alot of work and not worth it. buy a proven turbo and be done.

Who cares what boost you run, what are you hp goals?

How much are you willing to spend?

How much weight do you tow and how often?

It takes a good bit of engineering. I know new psd's, cummins, and ALL tdi's came with vgt's.. but retrofitting is a bit of work. I know a lot of guys are engineering vgt's on their 12v cummins, but they are also mechanical motors with a LOT less to worry about than our computer controlled HEUI powerstrokes.

I dont know the first thing about installing a vgt to your truck.. but if you have specific questions I may be able to help a bit

ok, well i was reading this month's (november) issue of diesel power and there was an article on schieds diesel extravaganza, in they wrote about a obs 7.3 with a vgt off a series 60 detroit. but the article didnt specify how it was hooked up.....

joebob, what would you recommend for a proven turbo? im looking for quick spooling, fairly low egt's (i understand you have to sacrifice something) and i'd like my hp range somewhere between 400-500hp when im done. i realize a turbo alone wont do this, which is why after the turbo and studs and springs and all that, im looking at a set of swamps stage II hybrids

also the motor's turning 307k....... i dont know if i should be worried about rods or a crank at this point? all highway miles, after 5k on the oil it still wont change color, shes tight, and the heads have never been off.

Stage 2s wont get you to 500. You will need at least 250cc hybrids. A turbo that will get you to 500 is a GQSSB, H2E, GT42r, S400 series

I could be wrong here... but i've never heard of any VGT's on a detroit 60 series....

you can hit a good 400-420hp with stage II injectors. You'd need a turbo to hit 500 though.

LOL that would sound SICK!! a VGT on a 7.3... and also imagine the bragging rights if you got one... Maybe not practical but I think it would be cool!

Yes I agree it would be nasty as hell... it would just take entirely too much time and money for me to do it. But hell-ya to the guy that can

series 60's after 2007 equipped with EGR have them. emissions.....

but yea! i've only heard of like 2 or 3 different trucks with them and they're strictly pulling trucks. i suppose a turbo off a 6 leaker would maybe be the closest i could get, but ohh the headaches.....

see im sure if i can get some kind of manifold made to bolt down on to where the pedistal is, and make it so i can hook a feed and return line to it and make a custom mounting bracket for the turbo that would take care of the oil supply. but im not sure how i would controll it.
