I plan to keep this truck for a long time so I want to get any of the worn parts fixed.

How many miles on the truck?

If it has not had regular maintance done I would go ahead and plan on new glow plugs, new Glow plug relay, new injector O rings, a compression test and a leak down test.

That would give you a good base line.

A new glow plug relay is 60 bucks and takes 10 minutes to change and a new cam position sensor is 24 and takes 15 minutes to change

Cam sensors do not wear out, they work or they dont. NO reason to pull one that is working.

In over a million miles of driving the 7.3, I have had one go out on me...

Dont touch it if its working.

Thanks for help, my truck has about 150k
I am going to replace the glow plug relay
Tomorrow and Wednesday I have a shop that
Will look at my engine and put new glow plugs in.
When I changed my fuel filter was covered
With grey stuff. Is this normal? The diesel fuel
was yellow green in color.

Did the truck sit for a while? Gray could be algie in the fuel, could be water. Hard to say.

Add some Seafoam to the bowl, and keep the tank full of fuel as much as you can. This keeps Algie from forming and growing.

my truck smokes blueish gray at startup but clears up when its warm, my buddy has a fairly new motor in his common rail cummins and it smokes the same color at startup. i've never gotten a straight answer on this subject.
