Default Oil Filter By-pass

While changing my oil filter the other day, a spring and plunger came out with the filter, after looking at the housing, is this the by-pass??? Can't afford to replace the housing yet, Ford want's $250.00 for a new housing, will it hurt my motor running it this way? My truck is a 1955 Ford F-250 4x4 powerstroke.
